WA Privatization Faces Stumbling Block
An ongoing story is privatization in the state of Washington. Although 58.7% of voters approved the measure, I-1183, in November, there is still a chance that the courts could throw it out. You may recall that two separate lawsuits were filed against the state in King County and Cowlitz County in December where the plaintiffs claimed I-1183 misled voters by posing as a privatization initiative when in fact it makes a lot of other changes to Washington's alcohol regulatory system, hence violating the state's single subject rule. Weeks later Cowlitz County Judge Stephen Warning heard oral arguments and denied the plaintiffs' request to temporarily halt the implementation of I-1183 until a final decision was made. The King County lawsuit, meanwhile, will not move forward until the Cowlitz County case is decided.
