A Setback for Costco

This is the closest Washington state has come to privatization since the war of initiatives began last year, where Costco and wholesalers took opposing sides. But this latest development is not the route Costco wanted to take. Gov. Gregoire has signed Senate Bill 5942 that allows the state to review proposals by private companies to take over its spirits distribution system. The legislation gives the governor's budget office 120 days to solicit and review bids. After consulting with an advisory council, they can then decide whether to recommend an offer to the Liquor Control Board.
