Constellation Brands' investment arm Constellation Ventures announced two new investments: Copper & Kings and The Real McCoy. While exact figures were not released, Constellation chief Rob Sands says they were both minority investments.
Copper & Kings was founded by serial entrepreneurs Joe and Lesley Heron, who also created Nutrisoda (sold to PepsiAmericas, the second largest Pepsi bottler in the world) and Crispin Cider (sold to MillerCoors, the second-largest brewer in the US). It launched in 2014 in Louisville with a focus on America brandy, but has become known for its large portfolio of experimental offerings.
The Real McCoy is a line of rums, whose name is based on the story of the Bill McCoy, the pioneer rum runner of the prohibition era. The portfolio includes a 3 year old, 5 year old and 12 year old single blended rums. They are made at the Four Square distillery in Barbados and range in price from $20-$50.
Real McCoy debuted in 2013, founded by Bailey Pryor and Sean Heyniger. To read more into how the brand got up and running, read our 2014 interview with Bailey at WSD 01-04-2014. You may also recall, industry veteran John Esposito--who played a role in High West's sale to Constellation--joined Real McCoy Spirits as chairman last year.
We'll have more after Constellation's third quarter earnings call this morning.
